Today the BBC reported on the use of torture and sexual and physical violence against Uyghurs in Xinjiang. The testimonies of those brave enough to speak out detail atrocities such as gang rape, rape with electric batons, routine systematic rape of inmates in several camps, starvation, forced sterilisations, torture and physical violence. Among the testimonies is also a statement from a woman whose job it was to handcuff women before they were systematically raped. All of these atrocities are said to have occurred in what the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) continues to call ‘re-education camps’. They are yet more evidence that the CCP’s mistreatment of the Uyghurs cannot be ignored, and that the international community should not turn away. We will be urgently raising all these issues with the UK Government and will be advocating for the international community to respond in anyway it can.
